2009 French Open Women’s Singles Champion Crowned!

by Rich Dansereau on June 6, 2009

french-open-2009Down goes Dinara! Down goes Dinara! For the second year in a row, Dinara Safina RUS (1) was denied victory on the red clay of the French Open. Today’s Women’s Singles final took only 1 hour and 14 minutes. In the end the powerful Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (7) defeated her fellow Russian, 6-4, 6-2. This was the first time that Kuznetsova has tasted the sweet victory of a grand slam title since her 2004 U.S. Open win.

This was a very evenly matched final with both players committing 22 unforced errors. The big statistic that stands out for this match is that Safina had 7 double faults to Kuznetsova’s 1 and in the end the winner and loser were seperated by only 15 points. Kuznetsova won a total of 59 points while Safina only won 44.

It cannot be denied that Safina is having a great 2009 with appearances in the finals of both the Australian Open and the French Open. Unfortunately for her, she appears to always be the bridesmaid and never the bride. Will this trend of excellent play by Safina allow her to finally hoist the victor’s trophy at one of this year’s remaining two grand slam events, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, or will victory slip through her fingers yet again?

Congratulations to both of these excellent players! Now it is on to Wimbledon!
