A time: My tribute to Skip Caray

by Alley on August 5, 2008

There is an old saying from years and years ago that talks about what I feel today. A time to cry and a time to mourn, a time to smile and a time to laugh, a time to reflect and a time to rejoice. I think that we have to do all of those things because that was just the type of guy Skip was. He was always the jokester and always the person to make you feel better.

I can remember back in 1976 first hearing the voice of Skip Caray. Being 10 years old back then (yes, I just dated myself) all I ever thought about was sports. That would change down the road, but for that time, it was sports. And all I could watch was the Atlanta Braves. The voice that I remember the most was Skip Caray’s. I later got introduced to Harry Caray and got to watch him and it made me love the Caray family even more.

My fondest memories can date back to the Bob Horner incident when he protect Pasquel Perez during a brawl with San Diego, or the time that the Braves played late into the night just to see a Braves pitcher hit a home run. Or the time where Otis Nixon went up to catch a potential home run. Or even the time that Sid Bream slide across the plate.

The thing that I will miss the most though is hearing him scream in the microphone as the Braves pull one out. “Braves Win! Braves Win! Braves Win! Braves Win!”

Skip Caray will be missed by many.

Skip’s voice was so familiar. Growing up a Braves fan I can’t remember a time I didn’t hear his voice.

The absolute best baseball announcer in my opinion. I’m just glad I got to listen to him in my own time. (1980-2008). I only missed 4 of the years he broadcasted in Atlanta!

Thanks for the tribute and memories, Dan.

JB, he is really all that I have ever known for the Braves and because of him I became a fan.
