ALCS Playoffs: Tenth Edition

by Rich Dansereau on October 17, 2008

With a sense of impending doom at Fenway Park the fans had grown cold and silent. The much beloved and quite remarkable team that opened this new century, the Boston Red Sox, had seemingly missed the train that would take them to the World Series. Facing a 7-0 deficit as they stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, you could have heard a pin drop, until

IN THE 7th  7-4 Result

IN THE 8th 7-7 Result

  • Drew a two-run homer
  • Kotsay a double
  • Crisp a game-tying RBI single to right

IN THE 8th 7-8 Result

  • Youkilis a hit and error
  • Bay was intentionally walked
  • Drew hit deep in right field

This is one of the most remarkable comebacks in baseball. It had the lowest of lows for Red Sox Nation as they saw their chances slip away. But like a building crescendo, the sweet music of the Boston faithful began to rise to an ear splitting level. The culmination of the Red Sox remarkable win was a guarantee to play another day and a page written in baseball history and Boston lore.

Did I mention that the Rays stayed around for about seven and a half innings. Hopefully they will stay for the entire game when they host the Red Sox at Tropicana Field on Saturday.

Karen – They definitely had a remarkable comeback. There is nothing quite like yesterday’s emotional roller coaster of a game for Boston and Tampa fans.

Rich, personally I think that the Rays gave the game away, but it will be interesting to see if they can seal the deal on Saturday.

The Rays did seem to fall apart. It is good to see a competitive series rather than a sweep or near sweep.
